Question : Is A Master’s Degree Worth It?

Hello all! I am an avid musician and composer who has been playing and writing music for over a decade. I have recently been getting into scoring for film and entering various competitions. I have been looking at master's programs, specifically the Thinkspace Education MA Orchestration for Film, Games & Television. My question for the group is whether or not this is worth it? I know that the ROI on the degree will likely not be great, but I wonder if pursuing a program like this will have a significant impact on my skill level and my odds of finding work in this industry. Thanks!

I don't doubt that you could develop a higher skill level, but in order to find out if the degree will help your odds of finding work within the industry, I would encourage you to first find out to what extent will this degree help you expand your overall network/circle within the sector that you want to get into. Are the teachers actively involved in the industry? How much interaction could you get with them and your peers? Could they link you up with clients looking for your particular set of skills or could they help you find these people? Could you meet with people with different skill sets than yours and potentially approach them for collaborations in the future? Could you perhaps do an internship with them after completing the degree or could they help you find someplace to do so? How varied are the backgrounds of classmates and teachers? The answers to all of these questions (and maybe some more that I didn't mention) will help you determine how much more will your network grow with this degree. Remember, the music business is one of the most (if not THE most) relationship-driven industries on the planet, so being able to expand your network is a MUST.
